At Bell Labs, Dr. Flanagan contributed to the development of signal coding algorithms used in telecommunications, voice-mail systems, and techniques for automatic speech synthesis and recognition. In addition, Dr. Flanagan invented autodirective microphone arrays for use in teleconferencing and pioneered the use of computers for acoustic signal processing. After completing thirty-three years of research and research management at Bell Laboratories, Dr. Flanagan served Rutgers University for fifteen years as Vice President for Research, retiring in 2005 as Professor Emeritus.
Dr. Flanagan died August 25th, 2015, one day short of his 90th birthday.
