The Paul Baran Young Scholar Award celebrates the next generation of leaders in advanced communications technology in order to inspire innovations that will help close the digital divide.

The Paul Baran Young Scholar Award Selection Advisory Committee evaluates candidates based on their innovative scientific achievements, leadership and entrepreneurial characteristics, and dedication to improving society through their work. We seek exceptional candidates who will bring an engaged, socially conscious perspective to the Marconi Society community and its work to expand digital inclusion through information and communications technology. The Selection Advisory Committee’s recommendations are informed by the candidate’s contributions in the following areas:

  • The scientific importance of the nominee’s work and academic achievements
  • The nominee’s demonstrated leadership qualities, reflecting a capacity for creative problem solving and innovation
  • The nominee’s socially conscious approach to communication technology in service of creating a digitally equitable world

You will need to have the following:

  • The nominee’s curriculum vitae
  • The nominee’s publication list (including patents) together with copies of at most two of his/her/their major publications
  • A list of awards and honors received by the nominee
  • The current address and contact information for the nominee
  • At least two letters of reference, in addition to the nomination, from recognized individuals who have substantial knowledge of the candidate’s work
  • One peer reference
  • A proposed award citation for the nominee
  • A description of the candidate’s research, leadership qualities, and interest in digital inclusion

Use the form below to nominate a candidate to be a Marconi Young Scholar.

Nominees must be 27 years or younger during the year of nomination.

The Marconi Society’s Paul Baran Young Scholars are awarded for their innovative scientific achievements, leadership and entrepreneurial characteristics, and dedication to improving society through their work. We seek exceptional candidates who will bring an engaged, socially conscious perspective to the Marconi Society community and its work to expand digital inclusion through information and communications technology.

All candidates must be nominated by a professor, mentor, manager or colleague.

In addition to the nomination form, will need to gather information on the candidate, their academic advisor, and three references as well as four files for upload:

  • Current resume and publication list;
  • Two page description of the candidate’s research; and
  • Three reference letters, one of which should come from a peer (such as a fellow student or researcher who has recently worked closely with the candidate).

The nomination form includes four questions (250 word maximum each). Please have all documents ready to upload in a single session, as there is no ability to save work. We will accept individual reference letters separately, if necessary, as long as they are received by the deadline.
